Christopher Francis Ocean known by his stage name 'Frank Ocean' played his final London gig last night (10 July 2013) in Brixton. Frank started his career ghostwritting for artists such as John Legend and Justin Bieber. He was also a member of Hip Hop group Odd Future (OFWGKTA) along with Tyler, The Creator and Earl Sweatshirt.
On February 16th 2011 Frank released his debut mixtape 'Nostalgia, Ultra' on Tumblr (http://frankocean.tumblr.com/) for free download. Singles 'Swim Good' and 'Novacane' both achieved high chart success. He then released his album 'Channel Orange' in July of last year.
The crowd were keen to see Frank come on stage chanting his name in the hot, steamy atmosphere.
He opened the show with a new song entitled 'Feel California' which he first performed earlier this year in Germany.
Despite receiving some criticism in the press for being static on stage, ironically this is exactly why I liked it. It seems to me that this made it more personal, up close and intimate; before singing 'Forrest Gump' Frank told the audience that he "grew up in New Orleans and also went to church." Whether those at the back upstairs could make out his smiles, expressions and hear the few words he did speak is uncertain. If he seems introspective, maybe it's because his songs seem to be so deeply personal. Frank performed 'Feeling California' and 'Anything for you,' that will feature on his new album, tracks from 'Channel Orange' 'Novacane' from 'Nostalgia, Ultra' and 'Wise Man' which was originally recorded for Quentin Tarantino's 'Diego Unchained.' Sadly he only sang a few lines of an A capella 'Swim Good' (which is my mums all time favourite song!)
Truly loved it!
Just a quick note to Brixton Academy - I understand the need to take away our water but if it's a rule please be consistent, as some people appeared to have 1.5 L bottles but most people had theirs taken from them and provide more than 1 plastic bottle of water poured into the mouths of the people at the front, two times during 2 hours especially when a girl fainted. Oh, and some polite security staff would be nice as well!
Frank's due to headline the Pepsi Max stage at the Wireless Festival on Friday July 12th.
